COMPARISON OF CARIES SCORES OF RATS BETWEEN STAINING AND NON-STAINING METHOD

Abstract
The caries scores of the teeth samples from rats fed cariogenic and/or anticariogenic substances were graded by Keyes¡¯ method after staining by modified Choung¡¯s method. The caries scores thus obtained were compared with the previous scores which were obtained with the aid of probe and stereomicroscope after thorough cleansing without grinding and staining of the teeth samples.
The results were as follows.
1. Overall increases in caries scores were resulted after grading by staining method. (The mean caries score by staining method was 23.2% higher than that obtained by non-staining method.) However, there was a good correlation between the caries scores of staining and non-staining method.
2. By staining method caries degree E and Ds showed 78.5 and 43.1% higher score, but caries degree Dm and Dx showed 40.0 and 32.1% lower score than those by non-staining method. There were also good correlations between the two methods in all caries degrees.
